CHAPTER TEN

As they ran through the woods, Xander learned all about the strange world he was accidentally exploring. Luckily, thoughts don’t get winded. Even when sprinting at full speed, thoughts come out quite loudly. They might be a bit jumbled due to all the chaos, but they could be heard by others very easily. Or they could be heard by others wearing a ridiculous tiny metal hat, at least.

This world was called Shushyerbum. It was a place of quiet and serenity. To speak out loud was not just considered rude, it was against the law.

When the Rainbow-Barfing Unicorns had arrived, Blep had done his usual complaining. Cradie had done her usual leading, and Ronk had done his usual ronking. All of it was out loud. It didn’t take long for the police Mears to catch up to them. Tobias had watched from a nearby blueberry bush. He had seen the whole thing go down as he ate his afternoon snack.

Without tiny hats of their own, the Rainbow-Barfing Unicorns had no idea that they were doing anything wrong. The police weren’t about to tell them and risk getting thrown in jail themselves. So they had rounded up Xander’s friends and marched them down to the prison caves at the far end of this wooded island.

By the time Tobias had finished thinking all this information to Xander, the two of them had reached a steep drop off. Tobias had been down on all fours for their run. And with a nod of his head, he thought, Hop on my back, Xander.

Xander did as he was told. He was doing his best to pant without making a sound. It took all of his concentration just to do that. He would welcome a free ride at this point.

Holding onto the fur around Tobias’s neck, Xander felt his body lurch forward. Tobias had leaped off the cliff. Xander wanted to scream, but he kept the screaming to his thoughts.

You even think loud, thought Tobias as he landed on a small dirt ledge.

The leap had been graceful. For all his size, Tobias was quite agile. He had made this jump thousands of times, and it showed.
